Points or cash?

Rule of thumb: hotel points should get you at least 0.5 cents each. Divide the cash price by the points required — if the value is lower, pay cash and keep collecting.

The fifth night free

With Marriott and IHG, award stays of four nights get the fifth night free. So book five nights instead of four — it often costs the same.

Status without frequent flying

Some credit cards grant hotel status without a single night stayed. That means late checkout, room upgrades and often breakfast for two.
